Over Half of Cartiva Implants May Fail Within One Month

Some studies have shown that Cartiva Toe Implants may have a shocking failure rate which may cause concern for anyone who has received the implant or is considering one. The Cartiva implant was designed to be placed between the bones of the big toe to provide a cushion. It replaces worn cartilage in the area. When it fails, the patient can suffer pain and limited mobility as the implant slides into the bone.

University Foot & Ankle Institute Report

A report was published in 2019 by the University Foot & Ankle Institute. The report states that around 50 percent of Cartiva toe implants fail. The implant would be positioned about 2-3mm from the bone’s surface at the time of surgery. By the first follow-up, some cases showed that the implant had sunken further into the bone.

The Institute viewed MRI and CT results and received information from other surgeons with the same problem. Other manufacturers are developing alternatives to the Cartiva implant. Another solution to this situation is a toe fusion, which fuses the bones together. While it also decreases flexibility in the toe, it can improve mobility and stability.

For those patients who need extra flexibility in the toe, they can have the Cartiva implant removed and replaced with another product. Patients who aren’t concerned about movement of the toe may benefit from a fusion. A fusion doesn’t wear out like an implant.

If you’ve already had a Cartiva implant with issues, you can contact your surgeon to find the best remedy for your pain. Contact one of our attorneys to find out if you qualify for compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other costs. You may be eligible to file a lawsuit for a claim against the manufacturer.
